The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) has issued an urgent reminder to owners of domestic and farm animals of the rules that must be strictly observed during the hot season. These recommendations are not just advice, but part of animal welfare obligations, the breach of which may result in administrative and even criminal sanctions.

Four key requirements:

Drinking water without restrictions

Animals should have access to sufficient and good quality water around the clock. Dehydration in the heat can develop in a matter of hours, especially in puppies, older or sick animals.

Don't leave pets in the car

Even for a few minutes, a pet left in a car is at risk of death. The temperature in the car interior in the sun can exceed 50°C in 10 minutes - an effect comparable to a closed oven. ALVA emphasises: even a short absence does not justify the risk.

No exercise in the heat

During the daytime hours when temperatures are at their peak, animals should not be forced to perform active activities, whether walking, transporting or exercising. Overheating in animals can occur rapidly and lead to heat stroke.

Mandatory sheltering outdoors

For animals outdoors - whether in aviaries, pastures or yards - shade is mandatory. This can be natural shelter (trees) or specially equipped (shed, navigation awnings).

Citizens who have noticed incidents of animal abuse or neglect are advised to contact help@deier.lu, which is ALVA's official point of contact, taking reports as well as advising on animal welfare issues.
