Municipalities of Luxembourg to turn green: the country shifts towards environmental public space design
On Thursday, August 18, the Ministry of Nature Protection, Climate and Sustainable Development presented the Nature Pact. This is a collection of measures to create spaces close to nature in urban settings. It also includes a system of rewards. They will help organizations and municipalities to create and protect such spaces. Almost all municipalities in the country (84 out of 102) have signed this pact. Now they will gradually create natural landscapes, new forests, water sources and habitats for animals on their territories.
The drought that hit Europe this summer due to the heat was an important reason for the signing of the Green Pact. Nature has greatly suffered outside the cities. And small natural patches inside the urban areas were hit especially hard.
What will municipalities do to protect nature? Here is a partial list of measures:
- Plant and maintain trees and shrubs.
- Grow flower meadows and glades with wild plants.
- Create birdhouses for birds, beehives for bees, houses for bats and other animals.
- Implement primarily environmentally friendly building projects.
- Reduce the number of sealed walking paths and parking spaces.
Each municipality will be able to benefit from the assistance of a special environmental advisor appointed by the ministry. In addition, a guide is available online that explains the basics of modern urban greening.
