Luc Frieden spoke out against radical parties during a visit to Germany
During his visit to Bavaria, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden drew attention to the importance of developments in Germany for the neighbouring countries. Speaking at a CSU (CSU) party event, he stressed the need to strengthen the centre in European politics, especially in the context of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Germany.
According to Frieden, only the parties of the centre are able to ensure economic growth and innovation through pro-European policies. He noted that the European Union needs a strategy to remain independent and competitive in order not to be beholden to the United States.
Frieden paid particular attention to the growing popularity of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, saying that coalitions with far-right parties undermine democracy. He recalled Luxembourg's stability amid political turbulence in the neighbouring countries of France, Germany and Belgium, as well as in the Netherlands and Austria.
Frieden meets Friedrich Merz, the CDU/CSU candidate for the upcoming elections, on Wednesday to discuss key European policy issues. The Prime Minister emphasised that he remains realistic and understands that Europe has not yet achieved sustainable stability.
