The Luxembourg government has officially stated that Prime Minister Luc Frieden never knew, met or had any contact with Jeffrey Epstein. The comment followed the publication of a new set of court documents by the US Department of Justice, in which the head of government's name is mentioned in the context of correspondence between third parties.
Frieden appears in two emails dated 2014, which were made public on 30 January 2026. These are correspondence between Jeffrey Epstein and Ariane de Rothschild, who at the time was CEO of the private bank Edmond de Rothschild.
In a letter dated 26 February 2014, de Rothschild informs Epstein that he is travelling to Luxembourg for lunch with the then Minister of Finance, Luc Frieden, and asks for his opinion of him. In a second exchange of letters dated 17–18 June 2014, she writes that she met with Frieden the day before and that he expressed interest in possibly joining the bank's board of directors, while noting the need for preliminary negotiations with Deutsche Bank.
In response to a request from RTL, the Ministère d’État emphasised that the references to the Prime Minister in the documents do not indicate any personal or professional contact with Epstein. According to the authorities, Frieden was not involved in any communication with him, either directly or indirectly.
The publication of the documents is part of the ongoing disclosure of materials related to the Epstein case, in which more and more names of politicians, financiers and business representatives are appearing in the public domain. In this case, the Luxembourg authorities are seeking to draw a clear line between indirect references in third-party correspondence and actual connections, emphasising the absence of any relationship between the country's prime minister and Epstein.
