On 10 September 2025, the Benelux Summit was held at Bourglinster Castle, attended by Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof. The meeting took place within the framework of Luxembourg's presidency of the Benelux Union, which the country is holding for the fifth time since the entry into force of the new treaty in 2012.
The summit discussed the political agenda of the European Union as well as strengthening cross-border co-operation between the three countries. Luxembourg, as host country, outlined its priorities in three main areas: development of the single internal market, sustainable development and joint work in the field of justice and home affairs.
Particular attention was paid to cross-border mobility, climate resilience and digital transformation, which are recognised as common challenges for the region. It also discussed how Benelux can serve as a model for wider European integration in a volatile international environment.
The second part of the event included an extended meeting with delegations from three countries and guests from neighbouring regions: Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, and François Decoster, Vice-President of the Hauts-de-France region. The presence of representatives from Germany and France underlines the importance of Benelux as a centre of transnational interaction in Western Europe.
