Luxembourg will continue to co-operate with the UK

On 9 and 10 December 2024, Luxembourg Finance Minister Gilles Roth attended meetings of the Eurogroup and the Economy and Finance Council (Ecofin) in Brussels. These meetings focused on the economic stability of the Eurozone, customs policy reform and energy taxation.

Gilles Roth had productive talks with UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves, emphasising the importance of strengthening the economic partnership between the EU and the UK.

Fiscal policy

Ministers discussed the coordination of budgetary policies to ensure stability and sustainable growth in the Eurozone.

IMF assessment

The meeting presented the results of the annual Eurozone analysis ("Article IV") from the International Monetary Fund. The report contains recommendations for strengthening economic resilience.

"Luxembourg remains committed to close co-operation with London. We share common values and interests," said Gilles Roth.

A package of reforms to optimise customs procedures was discussed.

Taxation of the energy sector

Considered updating the directive to promote green energy.

As part of the events, Gilles Roth held talks with German Finance Minister Jörg Koukies. The topic of discussion was taxes on overtime hours for cross-border workers, which is important for Luxembourg as a financial centre.
