Wiltz City Hall is on the verge of a political reshuffle

A political crisis has erupted in the Wiltz municipal council: on Thursday before lunchtime, local MPs voted against the budget for the current and next year. The fateful decision was made possible by an unexpected alliance between two representatives of the Democratic Party (DP) - Tina Weber and Maurice Muller - and six socialists from LSAP, who together formed a majority.
As expected, four councillors from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV), led by Mayor Carole Weigel and DP alderman Amel Cosic, voted in favour of the budget. But it was not enough. The CSV-DP coalition lost control for the first time in the current cadence, and a vote of no confidence in the aldermen is now almost inevitable.
The DP and LSAP have already announced their intention to form a new coalition. The new mayor has not yet been officially named, but all signs point to LSAP's Patrick Comes, a figure with an interesting political background: he was elected on the CSV list, but left the party shortly after the election to join the Socialists.
LSAP's most popular candidate in terms of votes, Michael Schenk, has already announced that he will not run for mayor for work reasons, but is willing to take the alderman position. That opens the door for Komes.
DP alderman Amel Cosic, according to his own statements, is preparing to leave the council and will be replaced by Fons Arend. It is not yet known who will replace Cosic as DP alderman. However, Maurice Muller is considered a likely candidate, given his performance in the last election and recent political activity.
