Luxembourg's Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel publicly criticised Donald Trump's statements about his intention to establish control over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark. According to him, Luxembourg's position remains unchanged: the future of Greenland should be determined by the Greenlanders themselves and Denmark. This was his response to the US president's comments over the weekend, when he threatened to raise customs duties for eight European countries opposed to the project.

Bettel emphasised that such statements appear particularly alarming in the context of allied relations. He reiterated that Greenland is "not for sale" and that the issue is directly linked to sovereignty and territorial integrity. The minister openly accused the Trump administration of exerting pressure, noting that such a line undermines trust in transatlantic relations.

Separately, the head of Luxembourg's diplomatic service pointed to the broader political context. As a representative of a small state, he stated that it is unacceptable for major powers to try to decide on their own what is "right" for other countries and territories. In this regard, Bettel called for a consolidated response from the European Union, acknowledging that in recent years there has often been a lack of unity and solidarity within the EU.

At the same time, he expressed confidence that Europe would not remain passive. According to him, inaction in such a situation is impossible, since the stakes go far beyond the Arctic region and affect the foundations of international law, allied commitments and the balance of power between Europe and the United States.
