75,045 people sought asylum in the EU in 2024

According to Eurostat, 75,045 people made an initial application for international protection in the EU in November 2024. This is 14% less than in October (86,920 applications) and 31% less than in November 2023 (108,895 applications).
Syrians are the leading applicants (11,565), followed by Venezuelans (7,210) and Afghans (5,880).
Germany (16,820), Spain (14,925), Italy (11,620) and France (11,345) received 73% of all asylum applications in the EU.
In relation to population size, Greece (79.5 applications per 100,000 inhabitants), Cyprus (42.4), Spain and Luxembourg (30.7 each) had the most applications.
There were also 6,430 repeat applications recorded, down 14 per cent from October and 5 per cent from November 2023.
Special attention is paid to underage refugees. In November, 2,820 unaccompanied children applied for asylum in the EU, most of them coming from Syria (860), Egypt (395) and Afghanistan (385). The leading countries in receiving underage applicants were Germany (875), Greece (525) and Spain (320).
