Luxembourg ophthalmologists perform first corneal transplant
The Robert-Schuman Hospitals in Luxembourg have taken a revolutionary step in the field of ophthalmology by performing the country's first lamellar corneal transplants using the DMEK (Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty) technique. This minimally traumatic method of transplantation allows to significantly accelerate the recovery of vision and improve the quality of life of patients suffering from corneal diseases.
The method was initiated by Dr Christian Eulufi, who trained at Charité University in Berlin. "This is a key moment for our patients, who can now receive advanced medical services close to home and without long waiting times," he said.
The success of the operations emphasises the importance of corneal donation. "Every act of donation is not only generosity, but also a chance to give sight back to people with serious impairments," Dr Eulufi reminded.
Robert-Schuman Hospitals calls this development an important milestone in improving eye care in Luxembourg. The introduction of DMEK opens up opportunities to reduce the invasiveness of surgeries and increases the population's access to advanced technologies in the field of vision rehabilitation.
