The Minister of Transport and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, has outlined reforms to the registration system for personalised vehicle number plates. These changes simplify the process, eliminate confusion and allow the system to be managed more efficiently.

Previously, there were two parallel approaches in the country:

  • Série courante - the plates were attached to the car and transferred to the new owner on sale.
  • Série personnalisée - the plates were assigned to a person, not a vehicle.

This system created confusion and blocked a significant number of numbers that were reserved but not used.

According to the reform, now:

  • Licence plates are assigned exclusively to the owner and are not transferred when the vehicle is sold.
  • The option to transfer the number through a cancellation statement has been cancelled.
  • Four-digit numbers are distributed in the same way as other personalised signs.

These changes provide a more transparent and convenient way to manage numbers.

Luxembourg is now drafting a law that would allow free choice of number plate, similar to the system in Belgium. The draft is in its final stages and will soon be presented to the government.
