Rising infections in Luxembourg: the start of the flu season and new data on COVID-19 and RSV
The Luxembourg Department of Health has published a weekly review of infectious diseases including seasonal influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The data show an increase in the number of cases for all three infections, which calls for increased attention to prevention measures.
The number of reported flu cases continues to rise for the fourth week in a row. In week 50 (9 to 15 December 2024), 350 cases were reported, an 84% increase from the week before. In comparison, there were only 60 cases in week 47. The Ministry of Health strongly recommends vaccination as the surest way to protect yourself, as well as preventing the spread of the virus.
During the week, the number of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2 increased by 29%, from 76 to 98 cases. Wastewater analyses confirm a slight increase in virus concentrations and the predominant variant remains KP.3, last confirmed in October.
The number of RSV cases also continues to rise, reaching 226, an increase of 24% compared to the previous week. This virus is particularly dangerous for young children and the elderly, emphasising the importance of prevention.
To prevent infections, the Department of Health recommends:
- Flu vaccination.
- Hand hygiene.
- Use of handkerchiefs for coughing and sneezing.
- Avoiding contact with sick people and crowds.
- Ventilation of the premises several times a day.
The wave of infections is growing, but following simple rules and timely vaccination will help protect yourself and others. Luxembourg authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide up-to-date data.
