With New Year's Eve less than a week away, many enthusiasts are preparing to launch fireworks into the sky, even if it is somewhat illegal. Although Luxembourg favors a complete ban on pyrotechnics on its territory, not all municipalities agree with this decision.

The following municipalities strongly disapprove of the traditional Chinese activity: Aerenzdallgemeng, Bäerdref, Bartreng, Bauschelt, Beetebuerg, Biekerech, Biissen, Bous-Waldbredimus, Clierf, Conter, Colmer-Bierg, Diddeleng, Dikrech, Duelem, Ell, Ëlwen, Esch/Uelzecht, Esch-Sauer, Feelen, Fëschbech, Fiels, Fluessweiler, Fréiseng, Groussbus-Wal, Habscht, Hesper, Helperknapp, Hiefenech, Iechternach, Ierpeldeng-Sauer, Jonglënster, Käerjeng, Keel, Kielen, Kiischpelt, Konsdref, Koplescht, Leideleng, Lenneng, Lëntgen, Luerenzweiler, Mäertert, Mamer, Manternach, Mäerzeg, Monnerech, Munneref, Nidderaanwen, Parc Housen, Péiteng, Préizerdaul, Rammerech, Reckeng op der Mess, Rëmeleng, Réiden/Atert, Réimech, Sandweiler, Schengen, Schëffleng, Schëtter, Stauséigemeng, Steesel, Stengefort, Stroossen, Suessem, Veianen, Viichten, Waldbëlleg, Walfer, Wanseler, Wëntger, Weiler zum Tuerm, Wolz.

There is a fine for setting off fireworks here. These regions adhere to the government's views on environmental issues. In addition, loud noises frighten livestock and pets, which can cause harm to themselves or others.

However, there are some areas where it is possible to use pyrotechnics. Though a minority: Bech, Bettenduerf, Betzder, Biwer, Buerschent, Dippech, Ettelbréck, Garnech, Géisdref, Gréiwemaacher, Käerch, Miersch, Noumer, Pëtschent, Réiser, Reisduerf, Rouspert-Mompech, Schieren, Sëll, Stadbriedemes, Useldeng, Wäiswampech, Wuermer.

Contact the local government if you don't see your community on the list. They will be able to tell you exactly whether you can organize fireworks and, if so, under what conditions. Keep in mind that even in banned areas, it is possible to obtain a special permit. The requirements for this are individual, so only the municipality itself will be able to clarify this issue.

Remember the basic safety rules if you want to create a light show.

How to do it right

  • Fireworks should only be purchased from specialized stores.
  • Check the expiration date and the certificate of conformity. The former must be unexpired, the latter must comply with safety rules and regulations.
  • Fireworks can only be launched in an open area, place them on a hard surface and reinforce the installation.

Remember that fleeting fun and beautiful patterns in the sky are not worth the potential for injury and health hazards. Be safe for yourself and others!
