The Minister of Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, has responded to a parliamentary enquiry about rising gas and electricity prices in Luxembourg.
According to the latest data:
- In 2025, gas tariffs in Luxembourg have increased and the average customer will pay around €300 more per year than in 2024.
- However, compared to 2022-2023, when gas prices peaked, bills will be lower by around €100 in 2025. Overall, the increase will be 4-5 per cent compared to last year.
According to the latest ENTSOG (European Network of Transmission System Operators) report, Europe's gas supply in winter 2024/25 remains stable. This was possible because the EU's underground gas storage facilities were 90% full by 1 November 2024.
Luxembourg receives gas mainly through Belgium, which in turn imports it via the large LNG terminal in Zeebrugge. As a result, the country remains well connected to the European gas grid and has a variety of import sources.
For households using heat pumps instead of gas, the savings could be between €400 and €700 per year. However, rising electricity prices in 2025 mean that:
- Owners of energy efficient homes (with a consumption of around 7,000 kWh per year) will pay €400 more than in 2024.
The Ministry recommends improving the insulation of houses before installing heat pumps, as pumps are most efficient in modern or renovated buildings.
