From 23 March 2025, the first widened section of the A3 motorway - between the Croix de Gasperich junction and the Aire de Berchem service area - will be open to traffic on a 2×3 lane scheme. This phase marks the beginning of the practical implementation of the government's strategy for sustainable mobility and the fight against traffic congestion on one of the most important transport corridors in the Grand Duchy.

The new infrastructure includes not only carriageway widening, but also the introduction of special measures to encourage public transport and shared travel. On the section between Berchem and Gasperich, a priority lane will be introduced for vehicles with at least two passengers and for buses. This lane will operate 24 hours a day, with a speed limit of 90 kilometres per hour (70 kilometres per hour during peak hours from Monday to Friday between 6:00 and 11:00). In addition, the emergency stop lane will be converted into a dedicated bus lane with a speed limit of 70 km/h.

From 30 March, similar measures will be introduced in the opposite direction, from Gasperich to Berchem. There will also be a priority lane for buses and shared journeys, and the transition from three to two lanes will be implemented via a système de tirette to avoid sudden braking and traffic chaos.

The Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, led by Yuriko Backes, emphasises the importance of complying with the new rules. Illegal use of the priority lane is punishable by a fine of at least 74 euros. The carpool lane will be marked with special road signs and an extensive information and awareness campaign will be launched at the start of the project.

Work on the motorway will continue until the beginning of 2026, with plans to introduce static vertical signalling, priority lane maintenance and dynamic traffic distribution. From 2030, the entire A3 motorway - from the Croix de Bettembourg to the Frontière - will be controlled by a system of automatic traffic distribution and adaptive speed limitation depending on congestion.
