Eurostat: Luxembourg ranks second in the EU in terms of car ownership

Luxembourg is among the top three EU countries with the highest level of car ownership. According to a new Eurostat study, Key figures on European transport 2025, in 2024 there were 670 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants in the country, which is significantly higher than the EU average (578).

Only Italy (701) has a higher level of car ownership, while Finland (666) and Cyprus (661) follow Luxembourg. The lowest rates were recorded in Latvia (424 per 1,000 inhabitants), Romania (444 per 1,000 inhabitants) and Hungary (447 per 1,000 inhabitants).

The study also shows that Luxembourg remains one of the most mobile countries in Europe in terms of air travel. In terms of air passenger numbers per capita, the country shares third place in the EU with Ireland, with 7.5 passengers per inhabitant. By comparison, the EU average is 2.3, with higher figures only observed in tourist destinations such as Malta (15.6) and Cyprus (12.5).
