The transport chaos on the key rail route linking Luxembourg and the French region of Lorraine is continuing for a second day running. Following the widespread disruption reported on Tuesday evening, the situation remained critical on the morning of Wednesday, 6 May 2026. According to official data from CFL, the congestion was caused by a technical fault in the infrastructure near the town of Bettembourg.

The disruption has affected the main Luxembourg–Thionville–Metz route in both directions. A significant number of services have been completely cancelled, and the few remaining trains are severely overcrowded. According to the latest information published by the regional branch of the French national rail network, SNCF, more than ten direct services were cancelled in the morning alone. For example, the 10.30 am service from Metz has been completely removed from the timetable.

Although the timetable is not expected to return to normal until at least 12:00, transport operators remain cautious in their assessments. In the current circumstances, transport authorities officially advise workers who cross the border daily to use alternative modes of transport where possible or to reschedule their journeys for the afternoon. The situation is complicated by the fact that this section of the line is one of the busiest rail routes in Europe, serving a flow of thousands of cross-border workers.
