On 1 October 2025, Luxembourg Airport took an important step in modernising its infrastructures with the start of construction of a state-of-the-art fuel depot. It will be a strategic facility to meet not only current needs, but also to be ready for the challenges of the future.
The project involves the installation of six tanks with a capacity of 5,000 m³ each. They will be located on the city side of the airport, with direct access to the motorway and a supply system to the airfield. This arrangement combines efficiency and sustainability: in the event of disruptions to the centralised supply, fuel can be delivered by tanker trucks. This will provide airlines with several days of complete autonomy and reduce the risks of disruption.
The terminal is designed with an emphasis on environmental friendliness and technological flexibility. It will be able to accept not only traditional aviation fuel, but also SAF - sustainable aviation fuel, as well as fuels for military aviation. Heating and cooling systems will improve energy efficiency and safety. Thus, the project takes into account not only the growth of transport volumes, but also the transition to "green" energy.
Minister of Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes emphasised the symbolism of the moment: "This infrastructure reinforces not only security of supply, but also shows Luxembourg's visionary approach to transport and mobility". Lux-Airport CEO Alexander Flassak added that the relocation of the fuel depot will also open up opportunities to expand the airport's cargo area.
Work has already started, with completion and commissioning expected in 2028. The new fuel terminal will be a key element of Findel's development, strengthening its position as a reliable and environmentally responsible hub for European aviation.
