Luxembourg is struggling to deal with the bus stops

Problems with the organisation of public transport on Avenue Monterey in Luxembourg have become more acute. Passengers report systematic confusion on platform 4, where departure points, terminus stops and drivers’ rest areas are all concentrated in the same place. Currently, seven different routes use this platform, which places an excessive strain on the infrastructure and confuses local residents.
Eyewitnesses, notably regular passenger Emile Lucas, describe the situation as critical: because buses on a break are parked at the front of the platform, those waiting have to keep moving along the stop so as not to miss their service. This established practice forces people to devise their own survival strategies, such as splitting into groups to keep an eye on different sections of the boarding area at the same time.
Léon Ludovici, Director of the Public Transport Authority, emphasised in a comment to RTL that the current situation breaches established regulations. According to the rules, vehicles on a break must not be mixed with buses on regular service. Drivers are required to leave the stop during their break and return to the queue only just before the start of their journey. This requirement will be reiterated to transport operators in the near future.
Similar difficulties had previously been reported in the Kirchberg area. As a result, since the beginning of March, some routes at the Luxexpo P+R interchange have been diverted to the internal platforms (1A, 1B and 1C). In addition, operators have been reminded of the ban on idling engines whilst stationary on Boulevard Pierre Frieden. Further relief for the city’s transport network is expected this year following the opening of the new Héienhaff transport hub.
