Luxembourg’s National Roads Administration has announced the start of its second road tunnel maintenance and cleaning campaign this year. The first sites where engineering works have begun are sections in the Colmar-Berg and Schieren areas.

The comprehensive measures include preventive maintenance of safety systems, the replacement of faulty components, a thorough inspection of equipment and a general clean-up of the infrastructure. At the same time, in order to minimise the inevitable disruption to traffic flow, the vast majority of maintenance and repair work is carried out at night, which will require the introduction of temporary diversion routes.

It is worth noting that the modernisation programme is not limited solely to road routes. By early November, specialists will have inspected and cleared a whole range of engineering structures, including specialised wildlife crossings. The general list of facilities to be serviced includes tunnels of national importance such as Grouft, Rëngelbour, Stafelter, Gousselerbierg, Mersch, Rouscht, Howald, Cents, Richard Serra, Kirchberg, Saint-Esprit, Pénétrante-Sud, Merl, Pétange-Kirch, Biff and a number of other important transport hubs.
