Luxembourg's Interior Minister Léon Gloden has received confirmation from his Belgian counterpart Bernard Quintin: no checks are planned at the border between the countries. Belgium also does not intend to introduce control measures inside its territory near Luxembourg.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of a general tightening of measures in other Schengen countries, such as Germany and Austria, where internal controls have already become a regular practice. In contrast, Belgium maintains a fully open regime with Luxembourg.
The reaffirmation of open borders is particularly important for the border region, where tens of thousands of workers move every day. The decision to maintain freedom of movement underlines the sustained trust between the two countries and their commitment to the principles of European integration.
