EU plans to support bicycle transport
Adina Vălean, EU Commissioner for Transport, has published the Bicycle Declaration adopted on Wednesday, October 4. This is a document that will influence the development of the transport sector in the coming years. It is also an important indication that two-wheeled transport will now be supported at the highest level, and not just limited to regional initiatives.
The declaration, or manifesto, contains 36 principles for the development of cycling. These will form the basis of future legislation. Priority changes will focus on cycling safety, infrastructure development, and job creation in the industry. Cycling and cycling tourism will also receive attention.
As the bicycle is and remains one of the most affordable means of transport, such decisions are to be expected. At the same time, it is one of the most sustainable means of transportation.
However, the adoption of the declaration does not mean that the innovations described in it will automatically be applied. The document still has to be approved by the European Parliament and the European Council.
