France may introduce a residence permit language exam

Right now the French language exam is only required for citizenship. Although at the same time, migration services may oblige a newcomer to attend special language courses. This leads to a situation where a quarter of foreigners in the country either do not understand French or speak it very poorly.

Against the backdrop of this growing problem, Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin and Minister of Labor Olivier Dussaud gave a joint interview to the Le Monde. They shared the future plans to tighten immigration laws. The draft of a new amendment will be presented to Parliament in early 2023. Among the proposals are the tightening of the expulsion procedure, the creation of a special residence permit for certain jobs and a residence permit language exam.

The process of obtaining one-year and multi-year visas will not change in any way. It will not be affected by this exam.
