The EIU presented its annual Democracy Index. It included 167 states divided into 4 major blocks: full democracy, imperfect democracy, hybrid regimes and authoritarian regimes.

Luxembourg was just a few points short of making it into the top ten countries. The Grand Duchy came 11th, behind Taiwan but ahead of Germany. The final list of the world's best democracies is as follows:

  1. Norway
  2. New Zealand
  3. Iceland
  4. Sweden
  5. Finland
  6. Denmark
  7. Ireland
  8. Switzerland
  9. The Netherlands
  10. Taiwan

Given the small size of the countries presented above, the researchers concluded that less than 8% of the world's population live in full democracy, and 39.4% live under the oppression of authoritarian regimes. The latter figure has increased significantly since 2022, when it was 36.9%.
