Gallup's Global Safety Report showed deterioration in Israel and Ecuador, while El Salvador ranked among the "safest" countries for the first time. In 2023, 70 per cent of adults worldwide felt safe walking alone at night, up from 64 per cent in 2013 but down from a record 72 per cent in 2020. It is important to note that Asia, Western Europe and North America have the highest safety rates, while Latin America and Africa remain the lowest.

Ecuador is facing a serious security crisis: only 27 per cent of the population felt safe in 2023, the lowest in the region and the world. In Israel, after the October clashes with Hamas, the security level among the population fell from 82% to 68%. El Salvador, on the other hand, reached a record 88 per cent security level, due to the government's successful measures against criminal groups.

The safest countries in 2023 are:

  • Kuwait - 98 points
  • Singapore - 95 points
  • Tajikistan - 95 points
  • Norway - 93 points
  • Estonia - 91 points
  • Finland - 91 points
  • Iceland - 91 points
  • Kosovo - 91 points
  • Luxembourg - 91 points
  • Switzerland - 91 points

The study also emphasises that trust in local police and satisfaction with the quality of life in a community play an important role in increasing the sense of safety among the population. In 2023, 71 per cent of people worldwide expressed trust in their local police, up significantly from 62 per cent in 2013.
