On 27 January 2025, the world will mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, where more than one million people were murdered. UNESCO and Luxembourg are committed to combating anti-Semitism and commemorating the Holocaust. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay will take part in a commemoration ceremony at Auschwitz, while more than 70 events organised for Holocaust Remembrance Day will take place in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg's Minister of Culture, Eric Thiel, emphasised the importance of a "culture of memory" in a complex political and social situation. According to him, remembering the past is not only an obligation to remember, but also to teach in order to avoid the repetition of tragedies. This statement was made at the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Association of European Jewish Heritage.
As part of the Zentrum fir politesch Bildung initiative, which has been actively involved since 2017, films, educational seminars, and meetings with survivors and their descendants are planned for 2025. More than 2,000 children have already registered for educational programmes, including screenings of films about the Holocaust, visits to the memorial in Zinkfontan and special lectures.
For adults, there will be film conferences and discussions, as well as screenings of the films "The Most Precious Cargo" and "Riefenstahl". The Zinkfontan Memorial will continue its educational mission through seminars and projects that promote awareness of the scope of the Holocaust and the importance of human rights.
Holocaust Memorial Day programmes in Luxembourg recall the tragedy and the importance of combating hatred and discrimination, inspiring generations to build a world based on respect and understanding.
