The EU has more than 5 million teachers

The statistics on teachers in the EU are from 2021. This is the most recent information available. It is expected that a more recent study will be available in the near future, but the general trends can already be seen.

In 2021, as in previous years, the overwhelming majority of teachers were women. They accounted for 73% of all professionals or about 3.8 million people. Men accounted for only 27% of the total.

Older teachers also held the majority — teachers over 50 accounted for 39% of the total. At the same time, only 8% of young professionals were under 30. In addition, 46% of male teachers over 50 taught in high schools, and only 16% in primary schools. For women, the distribution is more even.

Luxembourg is one of the five countries with the lowest number of pupils per teacher. In the Grand Duchy and Belgium, it is around 9, and in Greece, it is 8.2. The Netherlands has the highest number of students per teacher, at 16.4.
