The first wave of winter cold has arrived in the Greater Region, covering Luxembourg, French Lorraine and southern Belgium. The beginning of the week brought not only a sharp drop in temperatures, but also the first signs of winter weather: morning frosts, frost-covered roads and even some wet snow.
On Tuesday morning, Luxembourg residents were faced with freezing winds: according to Meteolux, with actual temperatures around 0°C, the felt temperature due to the wind was -4°C. Despite clear skies and no precipitation, roads were covered in frost, the first serious reminder of the onset of winter. As early as Wednesday, forecasters predict more cloudy and wet weather - rain and snow with temperatures around 0°C are possible.
The second half of the week will be accompanied by persistent morning frosts: -1°C on Thursday, -3°C on Friday and up to -4°C at the weekend. This trend indicates a steadily wintry weather pattern with a tendency for further cooling.
In the French part of the region, especially in Longwy, Metz, Verdun and Nancy, winter is showing a different character with sunny, frosty days. In the morning, temperatures hovered between 1°C and 2°C, but by the end of the week it is expected to cool down considerably. Temperatures will drop below zero as early as Thursday evening, and by Friday temperatures will reach -4°C in Verdun and -3°C in the rest of the region.
Despite likely precipitation on Wednesday, mainly in the form of light rain, the weekend will again be dry, albeit very cold.
The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) has urged drivers to be cautious: in the province of Luxembourg, roads may be particularly slippery, especially in the morning hours. Wet snow and slush are possible in areas above 400 metres on Tuesday evening.
Wednesday will bring precipitation in the form of rain with snow, which may reach the border with Luxembourg. On Thursday and Friday, frosts down to -2°C are expected, with dense fog freezing on the roads in some places. However, Saturday promises to be slightly sunnier, although not warmer.
