On Tuesday, 2 July, Luxembourg will be under a red weather alert, with temperatures in the south of the country and in urban areas likely to reach 38 °C. The warning covers the period from 12:00 to 20:00. The information was confirmed by experts from MeteoLux and the national risk assessment group CERI (Cellule d'évaluation du risque intempéries et inondations), which has already held an emergency meeting.
Level Red is the highest level of weather alert, where heat waves pose a real health risk, especially for the elderly, children, people with chronic illnesses, and anyone who has to be outside in the heat of the day.
Drink plenty of water during the day (at least 1.5 litres per day), avoid going outdoors between 11:00 and 21:00, close windows, curtains and blinds during the day and air the house only at night. If necessary, cool the body with a shower or a damp cloth. Those who have to go outdoors are advised to wear a hat and light clothing, limit physical exertion, use a fan or air conditioner.
Authorities also advise spending time in cooler areas, such as supermarkets, cinemas or libraries. Special attention should be paid to loved ones at risk: check their condition regularly and help them get to a cool place if necessary.
