Funfair season kicks off in Luxembourg

In late summer and early autumn, communes across Luxembourg kick off festive events, big and small. This year’s funfair season began in Diekirch with the Dikrecher Laurentiuskiermes. The fair opened on July 29.

Funfairs in Luxembourg are still often held on Kiermes days, associated with religious holidays. That is why they are held near churches. However, now these are quite secular events.

In Diekirch, next to the decanal church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, you can ride carousels, drive around the autodrome, catch ducks, eat hot dogs, burgers and popcorn. The fun will last until August 15th. Everyone can visit the funfair from 14:00 to 22:00 daily. There are no age restrictions. Guests are even allowed to bring dogs with them. More than 15 different types of entertainment await the visitors.

The funfair season continues today throughout the country. In fact, the last day of the Welleschter Kirmes is celebrated in the municipality of Wellenstein. Until midnight, singing and dancing will ensue. And, of course, a festive feast is planned. This is a good opportunity to taste duderen, a rare Luxembourg plum. It’s native to this region of the country. It’s also worth appreciating the spirits drink made from duderen, which is prepared specifically for the celebration.

Other cities and communes of the Grand Duchy are also preparing for the fairs. And already on August 19, Schueberfouer will open on the streets of the capital. It’s the largest street festival in the country. And the preparations for it are already well underway.
