The world's largest mural in the Samchykivskyi style appeared in Luxembourg

It took the artists two weeks to create the mural. All the time they were affected by rain, hurricane winds, and cold. The wall was decorated by artists from Ukraine, Luxembourg, Great Britain, and Croatia. According to its creators, the mural is currently the largest Samchykivskyi-style mural in the world.

Mural painting is a type of monumental art that is painted on architectural structures and other solid surfaces. It differs from fresco in that it is not applied to raw plaster but to a finished surface.

The 70 m² wall is now the "guardian of the house". It includes elements such as the Tree of Life, animals and birds symbolizing growth and prosperity. Some parts of the mural are painted in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, symbolizing the rebirth, strength and endurance of the Ukrainian people.

Tetiana Pashkevych, who lives in this house, became the leader of the project. The idea was supported by the owner of the building, Barbara Tosi, who liked the style and colors of Samchykivskyi style. The artistic direction was taken by Olha Mashevska — master of Ukrainian folk art, artist, teacher, illustrator and author — and her daughter Karina.

About a year ago, I visited my friends in Luxembourg. Barbara liked a handbag with a Samchykivskyi-style painting that I bought in the village of Samchyky in the city of Khmelnytskyi. I explained the significance of the paintings, the village where almost all buildings, schools, public transport stops, and cafes are painted in the Samchykivskyi style, and showed her photos. That's how the idea of creating a mural on her wall was born.

The mural will be opened today, November 7, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at Rui Giselbert 28, near Place De France.
