On 24 February 2025, the National Institute of Languages of Luxembourg (INLL) kicked off the spring semester with more than 7,600 students studying 10 languages at four sites: INLL-Glacis, INLL-Belval, INLL-Mersch and a temporary location at ENSA (Strassen). This semester, due to renovations at Lycée Robert Schuman Luxembourg, 45 courses were temporarily relocated to Strassen.
INLL offers courses in the three official languages of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish, German and French), as well as English, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Russian for beginners. This pluralism reflects Luxembourg's multicultural society and the demand for learning foreign languages.
To enrol in the course, you must complete an online test and interview, which helps to accurately determine your level of knowledge.
Launched in September 2022, the LLO.lu platform has become a popular tool for learning Luxembourgish and now has 94,700 users, an increase of 14,200 compared to September 2024. In April 2025, the platform will introduce a new A1- level, which will be an introductory course for absolute beginners in learning Luxembourgish.
On 24 February 2025, the Moving languages pilot project was launched at INLL in collaboration with the Adult Education Service (SFA). This interactive method helps you learn the basics of a new language in just eight weeks, with an emphasis on speaking. The project is currently being tested at the Luxembourg and French courses in Kirchberg and a teacher training programme is being developed in parallel.
The second session of the Zertifikat Lëtzebuergesch Léiere Léieren (ZLLL) programme for 27 candidates who want to become Luxembourg language teachers for adults has also started. The blended learning programme includes 50% face-to-face classes (literature, linguistics, didactics) and 50% distance learning. Registration for the autumn semester will open in June 2025.
The Poterkëscht podcast, launched on 22 February 2024, is celebrating its first anniversary with 86 episodes and over 75,000 listens. The podcast immerses listeners in Luxembourg culture and helps them better understand the Luxembourgish language. New episodes are released every week.
The number of students at INLL has been gradually increasing in recent years. In the academic year 2023-2024, INLL had 16,701 students. The highest demand was for French (6,485 students) and Luxembourgish language courses (5,686 students), reflecting the importance of these languages in Luxembourg's multicultural environment. The number of students on English and Italian language courses also increased.
