Luxembourg language proved to be of no interest to students
In the 2022-2023 academic year, a pilot project was launched at Lycée Michel-Rodange to allow the choice of Luxembourgish instead of Spanish or Italian as the fourth foreign language in the Humanities A section. However, the project never took place due to a lack of interest on the part of the students.
According to Luxembourg's Education Minister Claude Meisch, the problem is not related to a general lack of interest in the Luxembourg language. The main reasons lie in two factors. Firstly, in recent years there has been a decline in interest in the humanities A section in general, both at Lycée Michel-Rodange and at other institutions. Secondly, the pupils involved in the discussion prefer to study new foreign languages such as Spanish or Italian, which they believe offer more attractive career prospects.
At the moment, there are no plans to expand the project to other schools. However, this case raises an important question: how to increase interest in learning Luxembourgish among young people in order to preserve the country's cultural and linguistic heritage?
The Ministry of Education is clearly faced with the challenge of finding ways to make learning the national language not only useful but also attractive to future generations.
