The Luxembourg Directorate of Health has published a weekly overview of the dynamics of acute respiratory infections, including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19. The main outcome of the week from 10 to 16 March 2025 (week 11) is the continued decline in infections in all three areas.
The most noticeable decrease is observed in the incidence of influenza. The number of registered cases fell from 520 to 374 - minus 28% for the week. Among the typed samples 41% were influenza A viruses and 59% were influenza B viruses. Among influenza A, strains A(H3) (57.1%) and A(H1)pdm9 (42.9%) predominate, which corresponds to the typical seasonal circulation.
The number of confirmed RSV cases decreased from 91 to 70 - a 23% decrease. This also continues the general downward trend of recent weeks.
COVID-19 remains in the shadow of influenza, but even here the incidence continues to decline - the number of positive tests has fallen from 35 to 25 (-29%). Despite this, data from the effluent analysis system shows that viral concentrations have not stabilised - there have been fluctuations over the last five weeks, with some increase in week 11.
Genetic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 virus shows that three sub-variants of the JN.1 branch were dominant in February: XEC (57.7%), KP.3 (12.9%) and LP.8.1 (12.9%). This reflects a general trend towards diversification within JN.1, which is now considered the most transfer-adapted variant.
