In a year of severe humanitarian disasters - from Gaza to Sudan - Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) remains on the front lines despite cuts in global humanitarian funding.

The organisation raised €7.6 million, 98% of which came from private sources. It is a conscious choice, emphasises Esther Leick, Director of Communications and Fundraising: "Independence is only possible with transparency and the support of people who trust us."

Interestingly, MSF has donors in 98% of Luxembourg's municipalities - a scale that confirms trust across the country. Of the nearly 24,000 active donors, almost 9,000 make regular contributions, which provides about a third of the annual budget (€2.3 million).

However, there is a worrying global context behind the numbers. According to Thomas Kauffmann, the organisation's director, there has been a massive withdrawal of humanitarian programmes around the world, including due to budget cuts at USAID, one of the largest international donors.

Yet, despite the challenges, MSF continues to expand medical care around the world:

  • over 16 million outpatient appointments,
  • 1.6 million hospitalisations,
  • nearly 369,000 medically supervised births,
  • over 506,000 psychological counselling sessions.

This scale of operations is made possible not only by MSF's global network, but also by local chapters like the one in Luxembourg, demonstrating how a small country can have a huge impact on the lives of others.
