Pesticide sales in the EU fall by a further 9% in 2023

Some 292,000 tonnes of pesticides were sold in the European Union in 2023, the lowest figure since 2011. Compared to 2022, sales were down 9 per cent and 18 per cent lower than in 2021, Eurostat data show.
France (23%), Spain (18%), Germany and Italy (14% each) accounted for the largest shares of sales volumes. The main categories of products sold were fungicides and bactericides (39%), herbicides and moss killers (36%), and insecticides and acaricides (17%).
Portugal and Italy (both minus 44%) are the countries that recorded the largest decrease in sales since 2011. At the same time, sales in Latvia increased by 55% and in Austria by 52%.
