A major night-time fire triggered the LU-Alert system

At around midnight, a major fire broke out at a scrap metal tip within the Mertert port area. Given the high level of difficulty involved in extinguishing fires at such industrial sites and the potential toxicity of the smoke emitted, the authorities promptly activated the LU-Alert public warning system, strongly advising local residents not to open their doors or windows.
Fire crews from Mertert, Flaxweiler, Hesperange, Manternach and Luxembourg were dispatched to the scene. In addition to the standard crews, a specialist CGDIS unit trained to deal with hazardous and toxic substances took part in the operation. As the mayor of the municipality, Jérôme Laurent, confirmed in a statement this morning, the emergency services managed to bring the fire under complete control.
