The European School in Kirchberg (École européenne du Kirchberg) has suspended all teaching activities. The decision to close the school was taken by the management as a precautionary measure after a threatening message was discovered in one of the school’s premises last Thursday. The graffiti, scrawled in large letters on a toilet door, contained a direct warning of an impending attack: ‘Shooting on Monday. I’m completely mad. Be ready.’

The situation escalated due to the rapid spread of photos of the graffiti on WhatsApp, which caused widespread concern among pupils and their families. Parents are criticising the school management for its slowness to act, claiming that an official response only came after the images had gone viral and the number of enquiries from concerned parents had reached a critical level. Nevertheless, on Sunday evening, the school management announced a temporary suspension of classes to reassure the public and allow the police to take the necessary action.

The police are currently on the school premises and are conducting a thorough search of all the buildings. The Luxembourg Public Prosecutor’s Office has officially confirmed that an investigation has been launched, but has urged the public not to create undue public alarm over the incident. Officials emphasise that excessive publicity is often precisely the aim of those behind such messages, regardless of whether the threat is genuine or merely a badly judged joke.

Despite being closed, the school is providing only the minimum necessary services to accommodate children whose parents have been unable to find alternative arrangements for that day. The police are continuing their investigation in an attempt to identify the person responsible for the graffiti and assess the seriousness of the threats made.
