Just over two years have passed since the installation of automatic average speed cameras on Luxembourg's A7 motorway - in the Stafelter, Gousselerbierg and Grouft tunnels. Since then, according to Interior Minister Léon Gloden and Transport Minister Yuriko Backes, more than 90,000 cases of speeding have been detected.
The Grouft tunnel near Lorenzweiler holds the record for fines. Here, cameras recorded 39,700 offences. 39,300 drivers exceeded the limit slightly and received a standard fine of 49 euros. In 400 cases, the infringements were more serious, with a fine of 145 euros, and 9 drivers even fell into the category of gross misdemeanours.
In the Gousselerbierg tunnel, the total number of violations was around 22,000, including 9 serious cases, similar to Grouft.
In the Stafelter tunnel, the situation was slightly calmer with 28,800 offences. However, it was here that the highest number of extremely dangerous offences were recorded: 12 drivers exceeded the permitted speed limit along the entire length of the tunnel so severely that they had to appear in court.
The control system is based on the principle of section control - it measures the average speed of a car over the entire tunnel section, rather than at a single point. This technology is considered to be more accurate and fair, but drivers continue to ignore the limits despite strict supervision.
