The Luxembourg Vianden Castle is located in the town of the same name in the northeast of the country and very close to the German border. Perched on a small hill overlooking the town, this magnificent structure was built between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries on the foundations of a Roman castle and a Carolingian refuge.

Its splendid exterior is a sight to behold, as it truly looks like a fairy tale castle. There are several viewpoints from which it is possible to appreciate its charm from afar and take beautiful pictures.

High-Altitude Overlook
Offering the most breathtaking view, this overlook is located at the intersection of Route de Diekirch and Rue Gaessel.
Village Viewpoint
While the view from the village below may not be as dramatic, it still provides a charming perspective. One prime location to observe the castle is along Route du Ruisseau near the regional tourism office.

You can reach Vianden Castle from Luxembourg City by car or public transportation. Here are the details for each route:

By car

Head north to access the A7 highway following a route that takes approximately 50 minutes. The best way to get an idea of the route is to take a look at it on Google Maps. Once there, it is possible to park along the winding Diekirch road leading to the castle, parking is permitted and free but the parking lots fill up quickly. Another option is to use one of the two paid parking lots next to the castle, one at Place Engelman, and the other at 2 Neipiertchen.

By public transportation

The quickest journey from the capital involves taking a train to Ettelbruck followed by a bus to Vianden. The trip takes approximately an hour, and you can find precise directions on Google Maps or mobiliteit.lu.

When is the best time to visit?

While any time of year is suitable for a visit, summer is particularly delightful, as it coincides with a plethora of events and animations organized during this season.

Late Antiquity fortifications

The rocky spur above the present-day town of Vianden was first fortified during the Late Antiquity period. Excavations in 1994 near the chapel of the castle revealed remnants from this era. The site served as a civil refuge castle during times of Germanic threat around 275 AD. The presence of Roman pottery and coins indicates its occupation until the mid-4th century when a stone garrison castle was constructed. The Roman tower of Vianden's fortifications remained useful even after the fortress was abandoned around 430/440 AD.

Castle during the Early Middle Ages

In the early Middle Ages, Vianden Castle was likely referenced in a donation document from the late 7th century. Archaeological studies have dated the entire castle area to this period. Discoveries in the castle's lower courtyard indicate continuous occupation from around 700 AD. The wooden fortifications of Late Antiquity were possibly reused during the Frankish period.

First medieval stone castle

The first medieval fortifications were erected around the turn of the millennium, comprising an oval enclosure wall. This fortification included a governance hall and a chapel within the remnants of the Late Antiquity tower. By the early 11th century, high-quality stone houses were constructed within the lower castle. Around this time, a stone entrance porch was added for security.

Early residential castle by 1100

By meticulous joint analysis, a square keep was added to the north flank around 1100, shortening the old hall's north side. The exterior wall of the longitudinal façade received narrow windows above a visible horizontal joint, indicating subsequent construction. Well-preserved latrines were discovered within the new hall's central wall, indicating aristocratic habitation. These enhancements suggest Vianden served as a permanent noble family residence from around 1100, boasting essential medieval fortifications like the hall, chapel, and keep.

Castle expansion in 1170

Around 1170, significant transformations occurred, as evident from dendrochronological dating. Notably, a monumental chapel was constructed in a decagonal plan, featuring a wide southeast-facing choir. A larger residential tower replaced the original, showcasing architectural sophistication with sculptures and blind arcades. A rampart walkway connecting these structures emphasized the castle's grandeur. These renovations marked Vianden's transition to Gothic architecture, with vaulted ceilings and extended fortifications to the lower courtyard.

Gothic transformation

In the late 13th century, Vianden underwent Gothic-style renovations, including gabled roofs and expanded residential quarters. Towers were added to the northwest bastion, solidifying Vianden's iconic silhouette. These enhancements, overseen by Count Henry I, marked the pinnacle of the Vianden counts' political power. However, by the late 13th century, Vianden fell under Luxembourgish suzerainty, diminishing its significance. The castle gradually transformed into a princely residence before its dismantlement during the 17th century, losing its former political and architectural glory.

Modern era and demolition

By the late 13th century, Vianden Castle came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Luxembourg, gradually losing significance. After the death of the last descendant of the Vianden line in 1417, the castle fell into decline. During the 17th century, new residences were built within the castle grounds, but Vianden had lost its political prominence. The castle's medieval structures were demolished in the early 19th century, marking the end of its grandeur.

Reconstruction and recent times

In 1890, the castle came under the ownership of Grand Duke Adolphe of the Nassau dynasty, remaining in the grand ducal family's possession until 1977 when it became state property. Since then, it has been renovated and reconstructed while preserving its historical style, standing as a testament to Vianden's rich heritage.

The Medieval Festival is the largest medieval spectacle in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, set against the backdrop of chivalrous romance, medieval music, and acrobatics. Over nine days, more than 100 participants will bring medieval life to the castle grounds, offering a diverse program. Knight camps, fire and combat shows, acrobats, and jesters will immerse both adults and children in a bygone era. All of this is accompanied by medieval music and a magnificent medieval market with crafts and all kinds of delicacies.

The upcoming edition of this colorful event will take place from July 27th to August 4th, 2024, promising a varied and spectacular program.

Portae Temporis

On June 1st and 2nd, 2024, Vianden Castle will host the Portae Temporis event where each gate of the castle leads visitors to a different century. Inside the castle, visitors can discover life in the feudal era with over 100 actors entertaining them with a "living history," encountering ancient castle inhabitants like knights, nobles, soldiers, and servants. Visitors will travel from the 12th to the 18th century, meeting representatives of each era in their respective settings. The program also includes music, combat demonstrations, and much more.
