Luxembourg has a large number of public holidays. However, there are times when a non-working day falls on a Saturday or Sunday. What should you do in this situation? Ask for paid time off, as required by law. Do this within 3 months of the holiday itself.

This year, most holidays fall on a Monday or Friday. That means you can safely plan family vacations, trips, or other fun activities. A few holidays fall in the middle of the week, and there is still a chance that an additional day off will be scheduled by government order.

In brief, the holiday calendar is as follows:

  • New Year's Monday, January 1 — 3 days off, including the preceding Saturday and Sunday;
  • Easter Monday, April 1 - 3 days off, including the previous Saturday and Sunday.
  • Labor Day, Wednesday, May 1.
  • Europe Day and Ascension Day on Thursday, May 9 — additional paid time off on Friday, May 10 is possible. In this case, 4 days off, including Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12.
  • Trinity Monday, Monday, May 20 — 3 days off, including the previous Saturday and Sunday.
  • National Day, Sunday, June 23. You may take an additional paid day off on Friday, June 21, or Monday, June 24. This would be a 3-day weekend. Or, you can use this time off and schedule it to coincide with the weekend on the day of the Assumption.
  • Assumption on Thursday, August 15 — an additional day off on Friday is possible if you do not use up the time off scheduled for June 23. In this case, you will have 4 days off.
  • All Saints' Day is Friday, November 1 — 3 days off, including the following Saturday and Sunday.
  • Christmas Day and Boxing Day are Wednesday, December 25, and Thursday, December 26. You may have an additional day off on Tuesday and Friday if you do not take paid time off on May 9 and June 23. You will then have 6 days off at the end of the year.

It is also worth considering the schedule of school holidays when planning a vacation with children. In 2024 it will be as follows:

  • Christmas vacation will begin on Saturday, December 23, 2023, and end on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
  • Carnival vacation will begin on Saturday, February 10, 2024, and end on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
  • Easter vacation will begin on Saturday, March 30, 2024, and end on Sunday, April 14, 2024.
  • Trinity Holidays will begin on Saturday, May 25, 2024, and end on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
  • Summer vacation begins on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, and ends on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
  • The Halloween vacations will begin on Saturday, October 26, 2024, and end on Sunday, November 3, 2024.
  • The next Christmas vacations will begin on Saturday, December 21, 2024, and end on Sunday, January 5, 2025.
