In Luxembourg, according to Eurostat data for 2023, about 9.7% of residents continue to work after receiving their first pension payment. This figure is close to neighbouring countries: 9.8% in France, 9.4% in Belgium and 12.8% in Germany.

In Luxembourg, the first pension is paid at an average age of 60.4 years, which is below the EU average (61.3 years). At the same time, residents of the country can receive an early pension from age 57 or a full pension from age 65.

Luxembourgers have several reasons for continuing to work, but the main reasons they cite are pleasure (46.4% of respondents) and financial needs (23% of respondents).

Luxembourg remains at the average level among EU countries in terms of the number of working pensioners. Estonia (55%), Latvia (44%) and Lithuania (43.7%) lead the way, while in Romania (1.7%), Greece (4.2%) and Croatia (5%) such cases are extremely rare. Moreover, men in Luxembourg are more likely to continue working after retirement: 12.3% compared to 6.4% among women.
