21% of traffic accidents with death toll occur due to alcohol

Alcohol remains the second leading cause of traffic accidents in Luxembourg, right after speeding violations. Of all the deadly accidents reported in Luxembourg in 2017-2021, an average of 21% were alcohol-related, according to STATEC.

According to the study, this percentage rises to 23% in December. Men are more likely to drunk drive than women. A total of 8% of women in accidents were in some degree of intoxication. For male drivers, the figure rises to 16%.

The younger generation was also more likely to be caught driving while intoxicated:

  • among 25-34-year-olds, 11% got behind the wheel in a state of intoxication,
  • among 35-44-year-olds - 10%,
  • among 18-24-year-olds - 8%.

However, there were violators among elderly citizens too: 6% of 65-74-year-old drivers had a blood alcohol level of more than 0.55 mg.

Be sure to follow the traffic rules, drive sober and do not break the speed limit.
