Luxembourg's Minister of the Interior, Léon Gloden, responded to parliamentary enquiry No. 1893 by MP André Bauler on the problems faced by the CGDIS rescue service in the country's northern region (Nord).
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the number of CGDIS professional staff in the northern region is increasing: while in 2018 there were only 22 professionals on staff, by 2024 the number has reached 79. At the same time, the number of volunteers remains steadily high: in 2024 there are 1,186, which is even slightly higher than in 2018 (1,185).
The total number of CGDIS personnel in the region has grown from 1,207 in 2018 to 1,265 in 2024. This indicates a positive trend in the development of the service and strengthening of its emergency response capabilities.
To improve the efficiency of rescue workers, CGDIS is building new fire and rescue service centres. At the moment, it is planned to build:
- Category 3 centres in Clervaux
- Category 4 centres in Fridhaff (Fridhaff)
Negotiations are also underway with the authorities of eight communes on the possible construction of additional fire and rescue stations. These include:
- Bettendorf
- Ell.
- Groussbus-Wal (Groussbus-Wal)
- Lake Haute-Sûre (Lac de la Haute-Sûre)
- Mertzig
- Préizerdaul (Préizerdaul)
- Tandel.
- Troisvierges (Troisvierges)
As part of the new National Plan for Organised Rescue (PNOS) 2026-2030, the required professional and voluntary staffing levels will be reviewed. One of the key performance indicators remains responsiveness: CGDIS aims to ensure that rescuers arrive at the scene of an incident within 15 minutes in 90-95 per cent of cases.
