Luxembourg accepts 98% of refugees. What problems do the remaining 2% face?
The main criteria for approval is that a refugee does not have the opportunity to go anywhere else. Most refugees meet it, but not all do.
The EU has activated a special mechanism that helps Ukrainian refugees obtain a residence permit and find work in the member countries. But, firstly, some of the refugees these days are not Ukrainian. And secondly, many of the refugees lived in Ukraine at the beginning of the conflict, but did not have Ukrainian citizenship.
For example, some people simply studied or worked in Ukraine. Luxembourg law declares that they can and must now return to their home country. Even family members — children, parents and spouses — of Ukrainian residents suffer from this rule.
According to statistics, by the end of June, 4,338 people had applied for asylum in the Grand Duchy. Of these, 238 do not have Ukrainian citizenship. For the majority of non-Ukrainians, the authorities have found a way to allow entry. 4,175 applications were approved and only 87 rejected. Some applications are still pending. But every rejection is someone’s personal tragedy.
Those ready to appeal the refusal are assisted by Luxembourg lawyers. We hope that everyone who needs asylum in these trying times will receive it.
