Within the framework of BIO-Woch 2025, the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, Serge Wilmes, presented the initiative "Biodiversity and Organic Agriculture - Sustainable Farming in the Service of Nature". The one-year project is implemented by the organisation Vereenegung fir Biolandwirtschaft Lëtzebuerg ASBL with financial support from the Environmental Protection Fund.

The main objectives of the project are related to three areas: promoting government programmes to protect biodiversity, supporting agricultural practices in sensitive ecosystems such as Natura 2000 zones, and strengthening cooperation between farmers and municipalities that are already taking steps towards a "green transition".

Special attention is paid to agrobiodiversity - not only species and ecosystems, but also genetic variation in cultivated plants. This aspect becomes fundamental in the context of climate change and for food security: the more diverse a system is, the more resilient it is to external threats.

The launch of the project took place in a playful and educational way: a master class was held at the Haus vun der Natur centre, where the minister personally prepared organic pancakes according to his own recipe. This symbolic gesture emphasised the idea that sustainable agriculture is directly linked to everyday habits - from the choice of food to the way it is prepared.

At the same time, the pupils learnt about the "2000 m²" initiative run by IBLA, co-labor and natur&ëmwelt ASBL. The initiative demonstrates that each person theoretically has only 2,000 m² of land to feed themselves. This space becomes a kind of "living calculator" that shows how our diet affects soils, biodiversity and climate.

According to Serge Wilmes, supporting such projects confirms the political will to promote an agriculture that respects nature and cares for the future generation. This initiative crosses several lines of the European environmental agenda: from ecosystem restoration to transforming the agricultural economy towards greater sustainability.
