Last week, the Luxembourg Ministry of Health presented an overview of the situation of acute respiratory infections, including COVID-19, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pertussis. The main conclusion is that most infections show an increase, but the epidemiological situation remains generally under control.

COVID-19: slight increase in the number of cases

The number of new COVID-19 cases increased from 101 to 104, an increase of 3 per cent over the week. However, data on virus concentrations in wastewater showed a decrease, which may indicate a slowdown in the spread of the virus expected in the coming weeks. Sequencing revealed that the predominant variant remains KP.3, which has been prevalent since September.

Influenza: virus activity is on the rise

The number of flu cases has more than doubled, from 11 to 28 in one week. However, the epidemic has not yet reached dangerous levels. Laboratory data shows that over the past four weeks, 54 per cent of cases are caused by influenza A and 46 per cent by influenza B.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV): steady increase

RSV, known for its complications in children and the elderly, continues to gain momentum. Twenty-four cases were reported in the last week, up from 19 the previous week.

Whooping cough: the situation is under control

The number of pertussis cases decreased from 4 to 3, indicating low activity of this infection.

The situation with respiratory infections remains under control, but requires vigilance, especially for risk groups such as the elderly, children and people with chronic diseases. The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the dynamics of the diseases and reminds the importance of prevention: influenza and COVID-19 vaccination and hygiene.

Residents are advised to seek medical advice at the first symptoms and avoid attending public events if they feel unwell.
