Luxembourg's railways have become safer
The Luxembourg railway administration (ACF) has published its 2023 report. The modernisation of infrastructure and the improvement of safety standards on the country's railway networks continue. Special attention is paid to reducing the number of incidents and meeting European standards.
In 2023, there was a decrease in the number of suicides and suicide attempts on the railway compared to the previous year. There were also no significant incidents recorded in the transport of dangerous goods, emphasising the effectiveness of risk management measures. Although there were no crossing accidents and collisions, three incidents involving rolling stock were recorded, with total costs totalling €8.4 million.
The second major achievement was the introduction of the European Train Control System (ETCS), which provided 100 per cent coverage and significantly reduced the risk of accidents thanks to automatic braking control. The modernisation of Ettelbrück station and the construction of a new line between Luxembourg and Bettambourg are aimed at improving safety and increasing capacity.
ACF continues to develop a safety culture among its employees by conducting special seminars and educational programmes for new hires. CFL Cargo, in turn, is implementing a safety culture maturity assessment aimed at combining procedural safety and flexible risk management.
ACF is also actively involved in the European Pool of Experts initiative, providing experts to assess safety certificates and authorisations for rolling stock, helping to improve compliance with EU standards.
