Refugee status applications in Luxembourg reached pre-covid numbers
In 2022, 2,269 people applied to the Grand Duchy for political refuge. This is almost twice as many as in 2021 when there were 1,250 applications. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn commented on the present data.
Half of all requests come from Syrian citizens. According to Asselborn, this is a relatively new trend, as previously there were considerably few requests. People from Turkey, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Eritrea, and other countries also seek protection.
Similarly significant was the flow of refugees caused by the war in Ukraine. In 2022 alone, 5,397 people applied for temporary refugee status, of whom 5,039 were Ukrainians. A total of 5,087 applications were approved by the Grand Duchy, more than 94%.
