Swimming prohibited in Remerschen ponds

A significant quantity of «blue algae» has been found in reservoirs near Remerschen. Swimming in these ponds can be extremely dangerous.

The «blue algae» in Remerschen is full of cyanobacteria. Due to heat and drought, it multiplies very quickly and can produce toxins that are dangerous to health.

After studying water samples, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) found the presence of Dolichospermum microorganisms, which are the main producers of toxins. Therefore, on Thursday, August 25, the Luxembourg Water Authority has completely banned swimming in Remerschen.

Swimming is not the only thing prohibited. It is highly recommended not to come into contact with water in any way. This includes water sports, fishing and even beach recreation. Pet owners are asked not to let their animal companions near the water and especially disallow them to drink — this can lead to serious illness.
